Ampilatwatja and Outstations vs Atitjere

Ampilatwatja and Outstations and Atitjere are two remote Northern Territory areas with very different layouts. Ampilatwatja and Outstations has a much larger First Nations population of 425 people and a far higher share of homes within a 15-minute walk of health services and parks. In contrast, Atitjere is much smaller and has a far higher First Nations unemployment rate of 33.3%, though it is far more walkable for groceries, with 95.7% of homes near a store.

Both areas have tracked similarly over time, remaining mostly car-dependent with no homes within a 10-minute walk of public transport. They share a young First Nations population, with a typical age of 23 in both places. While First Nations personal income is well higher in Ampilatwatja and Outstations at $396, both areas sit far below the national figure.
