Lajamanu vs Daguragu Outstations

Lajamanu and Daguragu Outstations are two remote Northern Territory areas with very different layouts. Lajamanu is a more concentrated community where every home is within a 15-minute walk of a school, health services, and groceries. In contrast, Daguragu Outstations is car-dependent and has no such amenities within walking distance. Lajamanu also has a much larger population of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, with 605 residents compared to 23 in Daguragu Outstations, and a higher share of people who speak a First Nations language (98.3% versus 69.6%).

Everyday life in both places shares some similarities, as neither area has any homes within walking distance of public transport or a park. While Lajamanu is described as mostly car-dependent and Daguragu Outstations is car-dependent, both have very similar, flat terrain. Despite these similarities, there is a significant difference in wealth, with typical First Nations household incomes far higher in Daguragu Outstations at $2,250 compared to just $714 in Lajamanu.
