Balgo vs Mindibungu

Balgo and Mindibungu are two remote areas in Western Australia. Balgo is the larger of the two, with 430 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people compared to 178 in Mindibungu. There are significant differences in language and employment; 94.4% of people in Balgo speak a First Nations language, which is far higher than the 69.1% in Mindibungu. Balgo also has a far higher First Nations unemployment rate at 66.7%, while Mindibungu sits at 45.5%.

Both areas share some essential features, with every home in both places located within a 15-minute walk of a school, health services, and groceries. However, the gap in walkability is widening, as Mindibungu is now considered somewhat walkable with 100% of homes near a park, while Balgo remains mostly car-dependent with no homes within a 15-minute walk of a park.
