Balgo vs Kundat Djaru

Balgo and Kundat Djaru are two remote Western Australian areas with very different layouts. Balgo is more developed, where 100% of homes are within a 15-minute walk of a school, health services, and groceries. In contrast, Kundat Djaru has no homes within a 15-minute walk of these services. Balgo also has a larger First Nations population, with 430 people compared to 126 in Kundat Djaru, and a much higher proportion of people who speak a First Nations language (94.4% compared to 82.5%).

Daily life in both places involves a total reliance on vehicles, as neither area has any homes within walking distance of a park or public transport. Despite these shared challenges, Balgo faces a far higher First Nations unemployment rate at 66.7%, which is 22 percentage points higher than the 44.8% seen in Kundat Djaru. While both areas sit far above the national figure for unemployment, the gap between them has remained significant.
