Weipa vs Injinoo

Weipa and Injinoo are two remote Queensland areas with very different profiles for their First Nations residents. In Weipa, First Nations typical household income is far higher at $2,910, and Year 12 completion is far higher at 59.2%. Injinoo has a much stronger connection to traditional language, with 88.2% of people speaking a First Nations language compared to 27.0% in Weipa. Access to services also differs; Weipa has far more homes within a 15-minute walk of schools, groceries, and health services, while Injinoo has far more homes within walking distance of a park.

Everyday life in both places is very similar in that they are both car-dependent, with almost no homes within a 10-minute walk of public transport. Neither area has a high share of homes that meet 15-minute-city standards. While Injinoo has a younger First Nations population and a higher unemployment rate, both areas sit well above the national figure for the proportion of people who speak a First Nations language.
