Victoria River vs Walangeri

Victoria River and Walangeri are both remote areas in the Northern Territory. Walangeri has a much higher share of people who speak a First Nations language at 94.6%, compared to 63.1% in Victoria River. Access to services is far higher in Victoria River, where 49.4% of homes are within a 15-minute walk of health services and 24% are near a school, while both figures are just 2.5% in Walangeri. Victoria River also has a noticeably older First Nations population, with a typical age of 25 compared to 22 in Walangeri.

Both areas are very similar in their layout, as they are both car-dependent and almost no homes are within a short walk of public transport or groceries. This shared isolation is reflected in the typical age of First Nations residents, as both areas sit close to the national figure. While the gap in First Nations unemployment is well higher in Walangeri, the gap in typical First Nations personal income is well higher in Victoria River.
