Kununurra vs North Kimberley

Kununurra and North Kimberley are two very different parts of Western Australia. Kununurra is a more developed hub where life is somewhat walkable, with 53.5% of homes within a 15-minute walk of groceries and health services. In contrast, North Kimberley is car-dependent and sparsely populated, with only 1.1% of homes near groceries and a much higher average terrain slope of 7.2%. Kununurra also has a far larger Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, numbering 1,314 people compared to 229 in North Kimberley.

Both areas have tracked similarly since 2011 in terms of language, with about 19% of people in each area speaking a First Nations language. They also share a total lack of public transport, with 0% of homes in either place within a 10-minute walk of a stop. While Kununurra has a higher First Nations unemployment rate of 13.3%, it also sees higher First Nations personal incomes, which are well higher than the $364 typically found in North Kimberley.
