Wiluna vs East Pilbara

Wiluna and East Pilbara are remote areas of Western Australia with very different profiles for their First Nations residents. In East Pilbara, First Nations household income is far higher at $1,529, compared to just $700 in Wiluna. Education and employment also differ, with Year 12 completion far higher in East Pilbara at 35.2% and unemployment well higher in Wiluna at 25%. While Wiluna has a much smaller First Nations population of 141 people, a far higher share speak a First Nations language (77.3%) compared to East Pilbara (58.2%).

Both areas are very similar in their flat terrain and a total lack of homes within walking distance of public transport. The gap in walkability is widening, as East Pilbara is now somewhat walkable with a score of 4.2, while Wiluna remains mostly car-dependent at 3.0. Wiluna's layout allows more people to walk to health services and groceries, but East Pilbara has a higher share of homes within a 15-minute walk of a park and a school.
