Cooktown vs Mareeba

Cooktown and Mareeba are two distinct regional hubs in Queensland. Cooktown has a much stronger First Nations linguistic presence, with 35.8% of people speaking a First Nations language compared to 6.2% in Mareeba. Residents in Cooktown also have far better access to health services by foot, with 65.3% of homes within a 15-minute walk, while Mareeba is far higher for school access at 45.8%. Mareeba is a larger hub with a far larger Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population of 1,298 people and more street intersections per square kilometre.

Both areas are mostly car-dependent, and they share almost identical outcomes for First Nations residents. Typical personal incomes are nearly the same, with Cooktown at $470 and Mareeba at $462, and Year 12 completion rates are nearly identical at around 32%. They also both have a similar amount of parks and open spaces within a short walk of most homes.
