How people contribute — volunteering, unpaid care and domestic work, and defence service.
A massive 31.9% of people in Alpha (L) volunteer, a figure that is far above the national rate of 14.1%. While community spirit is high, there has been a notable shift in home life as unpaid childcare has dropped significantly since 2011.
Participation
Volunteering for organisations and groups.
Nearly a third of residents volunteer their time, which is among the highest rates for similar areas. This figure fell slightly from 33.8% in 2011 to 31.9% in 2021.
Unpaid care & work
Caring for others and unpaid domestic work.
Unpaid care for children is far below the national figure at 12.8%, while only 18.1% do 15 or more hours of housework. Conversely, those providing other forms of unpaid care rose to 15.5%, which is well above the Australian average.
