Almost 20% of people in 500 or more volunteer their time, which is much higher than most similar areas. This strong spirit of giving is matched by a high number of residents who have served in the Defence Force. It is a place where people are more likely to contribute to their community than the national average.

About 19.8% of residents volunteer, which is well above the Australian figure of 14.1%. However, this level of participation has fallen by 2.4 percentage points since 2011.

Unpaid work is common here, with 24.9% of people doing 15 or more hours of housework weekly, well above the national figure. While the proportion of those caring for children has fallen slightly, the number of people providing other unpaid care has risen to 13.3%.
