More than one in five people in 5,000 to 9,999 volunteer, which is among the highest rates for similar areas. This strong community spirit is seen across the region, with high numbers of people also providing unpaid care and housework.

About 21.5% of residents volunteer, a figure well above the national rate of 14.1%. However, this has fallen from 25.4% in 2011.

Unpaid work is common here, with 24.9% of people doing 15 or more hours of housework weekly, well above the 20.7% national figure. This is alongside a high 13.5% who provide unpaid care, though the 24.4% who care for children unpaid is a little below the Australian average.
