English is the primary language for 76.1% of people in 1 million or more. While this is the most common tongue, the area has seen a rise in linguistic diversity, with nearly one in five residents now using a language other than English at home.

About 19.1% of people use a language other than English at home, a figure that rose 4.8 percentage points since 2011 and is much higher than most similar areas. Mandarin is the most common non-English language at 2.8%, while 2.7% of the population speak little or no English.
