A far higher share of people use a language other than English at home in 1 million or more compared to the rest of Australia. Over a third of the population speaks another language, which is 13 percentage points above the national figure. This trend has grown since 2011, making the area one of the most linguistically diverse at this level.

About 35.6% of people use a language other than English at home, with Mandarin, Vietnamese, Greek and Punjabi being the most common after English. This is among the highest proportion for similar areas, and it is consistent with the 5.7% of residents who speak little or no English.
