A gap of over 12 percentage points separates 250,000 to 999,999 from the national average for home languages. While 9.6% of people here use a language other than English at home, the same figure for Australia is much higher at 22.3%. This diversity has grown, with the number of people using other languages rising by 4 percentage points since 2011.

English is the main language for 85.6% of the area, while Mandarin and Italian are the next most common. Only 1.3% of people speak little or no English, which is a little below the national figure of 3.4%.
