More than four in ten people speak a non-English language at home in 1 million or more, placing it among the most linguistically diverse areas at this level. This reflects a growing trend, with the proportion of people using another language rising by 5.1 percentage points since 2011.
Languages at home
English and the largest community languages.
About 40.7% of residents use a language other than English at home, which is far above the national figure of 22.3%. While English is the most common language at 53.9%, Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese and Vietnamese are also widely spoken. This diversity is mirrored in the 7.0% who speak little or no English, a figure well above the Australian average of 3.4%.
