Nearly 20% of people in Rural Balance volunteer, a rate well above the national figure. This active spirit extends to a high level of unpaid work and care within the community. While some participation rates have dipped since 2011, the area remains much more involved in community and home-based support than most similar places.

Unpaid care is common here, with 13.6% of people providing care and 27% doing over 15 hours of housework weekly, both of which are well above national figures. About 25.7% care for children unpaid, a rate similar to the rest of Australia.
