A growing number of overseas-born residents has shifted the makeup of Port Stephens since 2011. While the area remains heavily rooted in traditional roots, about 12.3% of people now live here who were born in another country. This is far below the figures for both New South Wales and Australia.

English is the most common ancestry at 44.7%, followed closely by Australian at 41.2%. Irish and Scottish roots are also common, each accounting for over 11% of the population.
