Over 38% of people in Brisbane City use a language other than English at home, a figure far above the national average. This makes the area much more linguistically diverse than most other parts of the state and country. While English remains the most common tongue, a wide array of other languages are spoken daily across the city.

English is used by 53.9% of residents, while Mandarin (10%), Cantonese (2.5%), Hindi (1.1%), and Vietnamese (0.9%) are also common. The proportion of people using another language at home rose 7.4 points since 2011, though the share of those speaking little or no English fell from 8.2% in 2016 to 4.7%.
