How people contribute — volunteering, unpaid care and domestic work, and defence service.

Volunteer rates have dropped by 5.7 percentage points since 2011 in The Gap, yet the area remains highly active. More than one in five people still volunteer, and unpaid care roles are much more common here than in other parts of the state.

Caring for others and unpaid domestic work.

Unpaid work is very common, with 34.8% of people caring for children and 26.2% doing 15 or more hours of housework weekly. Both figures are well above the Queensland and Australian averages, alongside a higher than usual 13.4% providing other types of unpaid care.

People who served in the Australian Defence Force.

Defence Force service is much more common here than in most similar areas, with 4.7% of residents having served. This is a little above the Australian figure of 2.8%.
