A high proportion of people in the major cities of Australia balance their daily lives with significant unpaid duties. While volunteering has dipped, many residents still dedicate their time to supporting others, with 13.1% providing unpaid care to those in need.

About 15.3% of people in these cities volunteer, which is a little above the national figure of 14.1%. However, this level of community involvement has fallen by 2.0 percentage points since 2011.
Unpaid care & work
Caring for others and unpaid domestic work.
Unpaid work is common here, with 27.1% of people caring for children and 20.5% spending 15 or more hours a week on housework. This is higher than in most areas, and the proportion of people providing general unpaid care has risen to 13.1%.
