Outer Regional Australia shows a strong commitment to service, with a very high proportion of residents who have served in the Defence Force. While community volunteering has dipped since 2011, participation in unpaid care and housework remains common across these regions.

About 15% of people here volunteer, which is around the middle for similar areas. This is about the same as the national figure, though the rate fell 4.2 percentage points since 2011.

Caring for others and unpaid domestic work.
A little fewer people provide unpaid childcare here than in the rest of Australia, at 24.8%. Meanwhile, the 20.6% who spend 15 or more hours a week on housework is higher than in most other areas.

Defence service is a standout feature of the region, with 5.2% of people having served. This is among the highest rates for this level of area and is a little above the national figure of 2.8%.
