About 25.5% of people in the major cities of Australia provide unpaid childcare, making this the most common form of community contribution in these areas. While many residents help at home, those who volunteer for organisations are less common than in other parts of the country.

Only 11.8% of people in major cities volunteer, which is lower than most areas and a little below the national figure of 14.1%. This rate has fallen by 3.4 percentage points since 2011.

The proportion of people caring for children unpaid is 25.5%, which is higher than most areas. Meanwhile, 20.5% do 15 or more hours of unpaid housework, and 11% provide other unpaid care, both of which are about the same as national figures.
