A far higher share of people speak a language other than English in Brisbane compared to the rest of Queensland. About 24% of residents use another language at home, a figure that has risen by 5.5 percentage points since 2011. This makes the city more linguistically diverse than the national average.

While 71.6% of people speak only English, 24% use another language at home, which is far above the Queensland figure of 13.2%. Mandarin is the most common second language at 4.4%. Around 3.4% of residents speak little or no English, which is a little above the state average and has barely changed since 2016.
