How people contribute — volunteering, unpaid care and domestic work, and defence service.
Over a quarter of people in Brisbane provide unpaid childcare, marking it as the most common form of community contribution in the city. While these family-focused roles are prevalent, volunteering has dropped significantly over the last decade. The typical resident is now less likely to volunteer than they were in 2011.

About 15.7% of people volunteer, which is a little above the national figure of 14.1%. However, this is lower than most other areas and shows a drop of 4.9 percentage points since 2011.
Unpaid care & work
Caring for others and unpaid domestic work.
Around 26.4% of residents provide unpaid childcare, a figure that is higher than most areas and about the same as the national rate. Meanwhile, only 10.6% provide other unpaid care, and the 19.0% who do 15 or more hours of housework is much lower than in most areas.
