Nearly half of all people in Sydney were born overseas, a figure far above the national average. This reflects a massive shift in the area's makeup, as the proportion of overseas-born residents has jumped by 39 percentage points since 2011.

The ancestries people most identify with.
English is the most common ancestry at 24.6%, followed by Chinese at 17.3% and Australian at 16.8%. Irish and Scottish ancestries also feature prominently at 10.5% and 7.3% respectively.

Australia and the largest overseas communities.
Overseas-born residents make up 48.9% of the population, which is far above the 27.7% national figure. While 44.4% were born in Australia, the most common overseas birthplaces are China (8.1%) and England (4.7%).
