Barmera Paringa
Barmera and Paringa are two nearby South Australian areas with very different resident profiles. Barmera is much older, with a typical resident aged 50 and 33.3% of people aged 65 and over. This is consistent with a higher number of people living alone (43.1%) and a much higher rate of long-term health conditions (45.2%). In contrast, Paringa is younger and more focused on family living, with far more separate houses (94.1%) and homes with three or more bedrooms (83.3%). Paringa also has a much larger share of recent overseas arrivals at 25.8%.
The gap in how many people live alone has widened since 2011, but other similarities remain. Both areas are described as somewhat walkable and have about the same share of residents with a bachelor degree or higher. They also share a very similar typical weekly rent of around $200. While Barmera has more homes within a 15-minute walk of a school, Paringa is much closer to health services.
