Mirani Nebo
Mirani and Nebo (L) are two Queensland towns located about 62 km apart. Mirani is the larger of the two and has a notably different feel, with far more people caring for children unpaid (27.6% compared to 15.3%) and a much larger share of children under 15 (26.2% versus 16.8%). This helps explain why Mirani has more people per home and a far higher share of houses with three or more bedrooms. In contrast, Nebo (L) is more heavily defined by renters, with 54.9% of homes rented compared to 28.8% in Mirani, and it has a much higher share of people living alone (34.7% versus 19.9%).
Since 2011, these two areas have drifted further apart in several key ways. The gap in rental rates has widened significantly, while the difference in typical personal income has flipped, with Nebo (L) now seeing a typical weekly income of $1,092, which is well higher than the $787 in Mirani. Despite these shifts, the two towns remain very similar in other areas; they have almost identical unemployment rates and a similar proportion of people who served in the Defence Force.
