Blackwater and Duaringa (L) are two very different Queensland towns. Blackwater is a younger, wealthier hub where the typical resident is 31 and the typical weekly household income is $2,356. It has a large mining workforce and more people earning $2,000 or more a week (25.2%). In contrast, Duaringa (L) is a sparsely populated area with a much older population; the typical resident is 48 and the typical household income is far lower at $1,145. Duaringa (L) also has a much higher share of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents (34.9%) and more homes owned outright (41.8%).
Both areas are similar in that they are somewhat walkable and have nearly identical rates of people using other languages at home. While they share these traits, the gaps between them are growing in other areas. The difference in typical income and the age gap have both widened since 2011. Blackwater's lead in full-time employment has also increased, while the gap in home ownership has become much larger over the same period.
