Coonamble Mendooran

Coonamble and Mendooran (L) are two different types of rural centres in New South Wales. Coonamble has a much larger Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population at 43.2%, and a higher share of one-parent families at 34.6%. It also has more recent arrivals from overseas (20.4%) and a higher proportion of renters at 35.0%. In contrast, Mendooran (L) is far older, with a typical resident aged 46 and 31.6% of people aged 65 and over. Home ownership is also much more common there, with 55.7% of homes owned outright.

Since 2011, the two areas have moved in opposite directions across several measures. The age gap has flipped, with residents now far older in Mendooran (L), and the gap in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population has widened significantly. However, they share some commonalities, such as very low rates of people who speak little or no English and similar levels of volunteers. Both areas also sit well below the national figure for typical household and personal incomes.
