Brennan Nelson
Nelson and Brennan are two nearby Northern Territory areas with very different layouts. Nelson is far more spread out and car-dependent, with 88.8% of homes being separate houses. In contrast, Brennan is somewhat walkable and much more compact, where 99.9% of homes are within a 15-minute walk of a park and 99.2% are near public transport. Brennan has a younger feel, with a typical resident aged 31 and a higher share of children under 15 (25.2%) compared to Nelson's 16.2%. This helps explain why Brennan has far more people caring for children unpaid (35.2% versus 22.5% in Nelson).
Since 2011, the two areas have moved in opposite directions regarding housing and demographics. While Nelson now has a far higher share of homes owned outright (27.1% versus 10.8%) and a higher share of separate houses, the lead in these categories has either flipped or widened. Despite these shifts, the two areas remain very similar in other ways. They share almost identical typical weekly incomes of around $1,170 and nearly the same rate of volunteering.
