Flinders Giles
Giles and Flinders are both large, sparsely populated areas in South Australia. Giles is more urbanised, with far more people renting (41.4%) and a much higher share of homes within a 15-minute walk of schools (72.7%) and groceries (62.5%). In contrast, Flinders is more residential and traditional, with far more separate houses (88.5%), a higher rate of outright home ownership (39.2%), and a significantly higher share of volunteers (26.5%).
Everyday life in both places is quite similar, with nearly identical shares of children under 15 and very similar typical household incomes. However, some gaps are widening. The difference in rental rates has grown since 2011, and Giles has become increasingly more diverse, with a higher share of people born overseas and those using a language other than English at home.
