Canterbury Cronulla
Canterbury and Cronulla are two nearby suburbs with very different social profiles. Canterbury is far more multicultural, with 47.6% of people born overseas and 58.3% using a language other than English at home. In contrast, Cronulla is much more uniform, with only 16.4% born overseas and 9.6% using another language at home. There is also a significant difference in wealth; Cronulla is far more likely to have high earners, with 37.5% of households earning $3,000 or more a week, compared to 22.1% in Canterbury.
The gap in these cultural and financial profiles has widened since 2011. Despite this, the two areas share several common traits, such as similar proportions of people working from home and nearly identical access to parks and public transport. They also have similar levels of school education, with around 64% of adults in both places finishing Year 12. While Cronulla is generally wealthier, the gap in the proportion of homes owned outright has actually narrowed over the last decade.
