Dowar Islet vs Erub Island

Erub Island and Dowar Islet are nearby areas in the Torres Strait, but they differ fundamentally in how they are used. Erub Island is a residential community of 326 people, including 292 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It has a basic road network with four intersections per square kilometre. In contrast, Dowar Islet is largely non-residential and sparsely populated, with no recorded residents and no street intersections.

These two areas have remained distinct in their roles since 2011. While Erub Island supports residents with health and cultural amenities, Dowar Islet has no such services. Both areas lack schools and public transport, which is common for these remote locations.
