Geelong Melbourne - Inner
Melbourne - Inner and Geelong are two distinct Victorian hubs with very different living patterns. Melbourne - Inner is a highly urbanised area where 57.3% of homes are flats or apartments and 52.5% of households rent. It is a global hub, with 35.9% of people born overseas and a typical resident holding a bachelor degree or higher (51.4%). In contrast, Geelong is dominated by separate houses (87.6%) and more traditional home ownership, with 35.1% of homes owned outright. It also has a higher share of families, as 27.9% of adults provide unpaid childcare, compared to 17.2% in Melbourne - Inner.
Since 2011, the two areas have moved further apart in several ways. The gap in university qualifications and the share of people working from home have both widened. However, they remain similar in other areas, such as having almost identical shares of volunteers and people with a mental health condition. While Melbourne - Inner is a walker's paradise (9.3) where nearly every home is within a 15-minute walk of health services, Geelong is somewhat walkable (5.6) and more car-dependent.
