Port Phillip Bayside
Port Phillip and Bayside are nearby areas with similar population sizes, but they offer very different ways of living. Port Phillip is a high-density hub where renting is common (51.4%) and many people live alone (43.8%). It is a more mobile and international place, with 22.1% of residents arriving from overseas recently. In contrast, Bayside is more suburban, with 62.5% of homes being separate houses and 41.3% owned outright. Bayside is also more family-oriented, with a much higher share of people caring for children unpaid (28.8% compared to 18.6% in Port Phillip).
Daily life in both places shares many similarities, including an unemployment rate of around 4% and a high proportion of people working from home. They also have very similar school advantage scores and a similar share of residents who finished Year 12. While the two areas remain distinct, some gaps are closing; the difference in the number of people who have moved recently has narrowed since 2011, and the gap in university qualifications has also shrunk.
