Hackett Lyneham
Lyneham and Hackett are neighbouring areas with very different housing and social profiles. Lyneham is a more transient and diverse hub, where 32.8% of people were born overseas and 26.4% use a language other than English at home. It is dominated by smaller homes and rentals, with 48.3% of households renting and 37.8% of people living alone. In contrast, Hackett is more established and affluent; 44.5% of households earn $3,000 or more a week and 76.2% of homes are separate houses, compared to just 26.8% in Lyneham. This is also a family-focused area, with 20.9% of the population being children under 15 and 32.7% of adults providing unpaid childcare.
These two areas have moved further apart in several ways since 2011. The gap in home ownership and rental rates has widened, and the difference in the share of people born overseas has grown from 5% to over 12%. Despite these diverging trends, the two areas remain similar in some ways. They have almost identical proportions of First Nations people and residents aged 65 and over. Both also share the same level of job skills and are about the same distance from the city in terms of travel time.
