Northern Highlands Charters Towers
Northern Highlands and Charters Towers are two distinct Queensland regions with very different layouts. Northern Highlands is a sparsely populated area where 23.7% of people work from home and the typical weekly income is well higher at $914. In contrast, Charters Towers is more concentrated, with far more people living within walking distance of schools (66.6%) and groceries (59.6%). The two areas also differ in their populations: First Nations residents are far older in Northern Highlands, with a typical age of 29 compared to 18 in Charters Towers, and one-parent families are far more common in Charters Towers at 23.0%.
Since 2011, the gaps between these two places have shifted in several ways. The difference in typical weekly income has widened, while the gap in the share of adults working or looking for work has narrowed. They do share some common ground, such as having almost identical shares of recent overseas arrivals (around 17.6%) and the same typical number of people per home. While both areas have no public transport stops or departures per 1,000 people, they track differently against the national figures in terms of health and income.
