Tablelands Carpentaria
Carpentaria and Tablelands are two remote Queensland areas with very different profiles. Carpentaria is much younger, with a typical resident aged 30 compared to 43 in Tablelands. It has a far higher proportion of First Nations people (62.2% versus 18.5%) and children under 15 (24.1% versus 13.2%), which helps explain why it also has many more one-parent families. Housing differs sharply; 64.3% of Carpentaria households rent, while 44.6% of Tablelands homes are owned outright.
Both areas are similar in the proportion of people who have served in the Defence Force, which sits close to the national figure. This shared trait exists alongside a widening gap in housing trends. Since 2011, the difference in typical weekly rent has grown to $105, and the gap between the two areas' typical ages has increased to 13 years. While Carpentaria has far more people who speak a First Nations language, both areas remain equally unlikely to use public transport for commuting.
