Mareeba and Atherton are nearby Queensland towns with similar populations, but they differ in their social makeup and layout. Mareeba has a larger First Nations community, where 12.7% of residents are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, compared with 7.5% in Atherton. Mareeba is also more linguistically diverse, with 13.2% of people using a language other than English at home, whereas only 6.2% do so in Atherton.
