Morwell Rosedale
Morwell and Rosedale are nearby Victorian towns with very different social and built environments. Morwell is much more urban, with far higher rental rates (33.7% compared to 13.9% in Rosedale) and a significantly higher share of one-parent families (25.1% versus 11.2%). It also has a higher proportion of people with long-term health conditions (38.7% against 24.5% in Rosedale). Rosedale is more rural in character; it has far more large homes with three or more bedrooms (85.0% compared to 71.1% in Morwell) and a much higher share of people working in agriculture, forestry and fishing.
Both areas are similar in their proportions of First Nations people and the amount of unpaid housework residents do, and both sit near the national figure for the share of people who have served in the Defence Force. While they share this commonality, their accessibility differs greatly. Morwell is somewhat walkable and has far more public transport and a higher number of homes within a 15-minute walk of parks and shops. In contrast, Rosedale is mostly car-dependent, and the gap in rental rates between the two towns has widened since 2011.
