Mansfield (Vic.) and Upper Yarra Valley are two Victorian areas with very different profiles. Mansfield (Vic.) is more established and better serviced, with far more people aged 65 and over (25.3% compared to 12.6%) and more volunteers (21.1% versus 7.9%). Educational attainment is also far higher in Mansfield (Vic.), where 18.3% of adults have a bachelor degree or higher compared to just 6.8% in Upper Yarra Valley. The two areas differ sharply in their layout; 30.7% of Mansfield (Vic.) homes are within a 15-minute walk of a school or shop, while Upper Yarra Valley has no such homes and is car-dependent.
Many of these gaps have widened since 2011, particularly the difference in home ownership and the number of people moving into the area. Despite these diverging trends, the two places share some core traits. Both have similar proportions of people working full-time, those providing unpaid care, and a very small number of residents who speak little or no English. They are also alike in that they are both mostly car-dependent, and their residents experience similar rates of long-term health conditions.
