Brighton Derwent Valley
Brighton and Derwent Valley are two distinct Tasmanian areas with very different landscapes and connections. Brighton is a younger hub closer to the city, where 32.6% of households rent and 75.9% of homes are within a 10-minute walk of public transport. In contrast, Derwent Valley is more rural and remote, with a typical resident aged 42 compared to 35 in Brighton. In Derwent Valley, home ownership is more common, with 35.4% of homes owned outright, and there is far more rainfall, averaging 2,032mm annually.
Both areas share very similar typical weekly family incomes, around $1,500, and have nearly the same share of adults with a bachelor degree. While they are alike in these respects, other gaps are shifting. The difference in outright home ownership has narrowed since 2011, though the gap in rental rates has widened. Brighton continues to have a much larger First Nations population, which is also notably younger than the First Nations community in Derwent Valley.
