Adelaide Marion
Marion and Adelaide are nearby South Australian areas with very different housing and social profiles. Marion is more family-oriented, with 16.1% of people being children under 15 and 27.2% of adults caring for children unpaid. Its housing is dominated by separate houses, with 70.6% of homes being detached and 77.0% having three or more bedrooms. In contrast, Adelaide is a high-density hub where 56.9% of people live in flats or apartments. It is also much more international and academic, with 45.4% of residents born overseas and 45.5% holding a bachelor degree or higher.
Since 2011, some gaps between the two have remained steady while others have shifted. The difference in the share of people born overseas has stayed about the same, but the gap in home ownership has widened as separate houses became far more common in Marion. Despite these shifts, they remain similar in several ways, with nearly identical shares of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and typical weekly personal incomes that are almost the same.
