Moreland Port Phillip
Moreland and Port Phillip are both large, populous areas of Greater Melbourne with distinct housing patterns. Moreland has a much higher proportion of separate houses (53.4%) and three-bedroom homes (55.7%), while Port Phillip is dominated by flats or apartments (66.6%). This is reflected in the residents; Moreland has a younger population with a typical age of 35 and a higher share of children under 15 (15.5%). In contrast, Port Phillip is older, with a typical age of 38, and far more people living alone (43.8%). Port Phillip also has a higher share of high earners, with 25.8% earning $2,000 or more a week compared to 15.3% in Moreland.
Both areas are very similar in their international makeup, with about 33% of residents born overseas. They also share a similar typical weekly household income, which sits around the $2,000 mark. While Port Phillip has seen a higher increase in crime rates over the last five years, the gap in some other areas is closing. For example, the difference in the share of people who rent and the proportion of people using a language other than English at home have both narrowed since 2011.
