Alpine Benalla
Benalla and Alpine are two regional Victorian areas with similar populations, but they differ sharply in their social and environmental profiles. Alpine is lapped by much higher annual rainfall, with 1,374mm compared to Benalla's 738mm. Residents in Alpine generally have far better access to money and resources, and the area is far less prone to crime, with a recorded offence rate of 2,932 per 100,000 people, which is much lower than Benalla's 7,565. Benalla, however, has far better public transport links, with 65.9% of homes within a 10-minute walk of a stop and far more frequent departures.
Both areas are almost identical in their share of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents, at about 1% to 2%. They also share similar household sizes and a comparable number of local businesses. Over time, some gaps are shifting; for example, the difference in the share of people born overseas has narrowed since 2011, though it remains well higher in Alpine. Meanwhile, the gap in the proportion of older residents has widened, as Benalla now has a well higher share of people aged 65 and over than Alpine.
