Murray River and Hay are two regional New South Wales areas with very different levels of advantage. Murray River has far higher access to money and resources, better education and job skills, and an overall higher level of advantage. It is also more connected to public transport, with 47.6% of homes within a 10-minute walk of a stop, compared to just 2.4% in Hay. In contrast, Hay has a much higher share of homes within a 15-minute walk of health services (54.9% compared to 8.9% in Murray River) and groceries (58.4% versus 31.8%).
Everyday life shares many similarities in both places, as they have almost identical typical weekly household incomes and nearly the same percentage of children under 15. However, some gaps are growing. The difference in the share of people with no religion has widened, and Murray River now has a well higher share of adults with a bachelor degree or higher than Hay.
