Coonamble Narrabri
Narrabri and Coonamble are two regional New South Wales areas with distinct profiles. Coonamble has a far higher Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population at 33.9%, compared to 14.8% in Narrabri. The two areas differ sharply in public transport and wealth; Narrabri has far more public transport stops and departures per 1,000 people, and a higher share of households earning $3,000 or more weekly (16.9% versus 10.5%). Recorded crime rates are also far higher in Coonamble across most categories, including sexual offences and property damage.
These differences are becoming more pronounced, as the gap in high-income households and the share of one-parent families has widened since 2011. Despite this, the two areas share a very similar makeup in other ways. They have almost identical proportions of people aged 65 and over, those providing unpaid care, and those living with long-term health conditions. Both areas also sit far below the national figure for people who do not identify with any religion.
