Coolamon Griffith
Griffith and Coolamon are two New South Wales regions with very different social makeups. Griffith is far more multicultural, with 22.4% of people born overseas and 23.2% using a language other than English at home. In contrast, only 4.6% of Coolamon residents were born overseas, and just 1.3% use another language at home. There is also a notable divide in housing and age; Coolamon is older, with a typical resident aged 44 and a higher share of outright homeowners (45.2%), while Griffith is younger, with a typical age of 37 and a higher rate of renting (32.3%).
Both areas share several core traits, including very similar unemployment rates and the same proportion of adults with a bachelor degree. They also have nearly identical shares of First Nations residents and children under 15. While they are alike in these areas, other gaps are changing. The difference in the number of people born overseas and those using other languages has widened since 2011, and the gap in rental rates has also grown.
