Barunga vs Jilkminggan

Barunga and Jilkminggan are two small communities in the Northern Territory. Jilkminggan has a far higher rate of First Nations Year 12 completion at 22.3%, compared to 9.0% in Barunga. Household income for First Nations people is also well higher in Jilkminggan, where the typical income is $1,416, while in Barunga it is much lower at $949. Barunga is the larger of the two, with 319 First Nations residents compared to 254 in Jilkminggan.

Both areas have tracked similarly since 2011, with a continued high use of First Nations languages. This is particularly strong in Jilkminggan, where 96.5% of people speak such a language, which is well higher than the 86.8% in Barunga. Both communities sit far above the national figure for language use. While Barunga has a higher unemployment rate for First Nations people at 13.3%, Jilkminggan's rate is lower at 9.5%.
